Where does Service Learning fit into PBL?

Project Based Learning and Service Learning are very similar. Especially with the philosophy we hold here at Magnify Learning that PBL should be solving an authentic problem.

At Magnify Learning we don’t really see a difference between service learning and PBL in a lot of ways. The structures can be different. In the next set of videos for PBL Simplified, we will be giving an overview of the 6 steps of PBL. These steps along with the 6 As are pretty well accepted in the PBL world.

The world of service learning can include different steps to investigating and solving a real world problem. Service Learning will also encompass the areas of advocacy where your learners may be informing the community about a specific problem in the community and invite them in to be part of the solution.

Here's a blog post Ryan Steuer wrote with Learning to Give where he explores the overlap of Service Learning and Project Based Learning: Great things Happen in the Overlap: Making the Connection between Philanthropy Education, Project Based Learning, and Service-Learning

As you dive deeper into Project Based Learning and Service Learning, you will see many similarities!
