How do I get my learners to collaborate?

Have you ever put your learners in groups only to hear crickets chirping or 7th grade boy shenanigans? If we are asking our learners to collaborate without practicing the skill of collaboration, we are asking a lot of our learners. After all, most adults don’t work well in groups. The solution is to practice collaboration. One way to practice collaboration is with ULEAD Cards. ULEAD cards give our learners a tangible thing to hold onto as they work through the often ambiguous task of collaborating.

We need to practice collaboration before it is high stakes such as building a raised garden bed or working to purify the local water source. First, we need to make up a silly story together using the icons on our ULEAD cards. As we begin to build the cultural norm of collaboration through smaller activities, we can expect the collaboration to go better during our content area projects. ULEAD cards are a staple at a Magnify Learning professional development workshop. We use them to help build culture quickly, gain trust, and to equip educators with tools to be successful in the classrooms.
