How do I build a network of PBL coaches?

After you’ve launched out onto your PBL journey, you may find yourself wandering about a bit. You will find a few dead ends and experience a few failures. We have been there, we are equipped and learning, but there will always be some course corrections needed as we blaze new paths for ourselves.

Michael Jordan had a coach. In fact, he had multiple coaches! Why? Because people that make it to those levels of greatness know they need help to keep growing. If the greatest basketball player of all time needs a coach, we should certainly be looking into it. So, who’s your PBL Coach?

An experienced coach can help you reflect and guide you on your PBL journey. Not doing the work for you or giving you all the answers, but structuring conversations and providing resources to help you find the best solutions for your individual context and classroom. A coach can save you 2-3 years of figuring it out on your own. If you are sure PBL is your path, you should jump in and find a coach you can be open with.

So where do you find a coach? You are looking for someone who has travelled the same path you are looking to travel. You want a coach who understands the challenges and fear that comes with doing something new. Find someone online or in your district who is a little farther along the path than you and start to meet on a regular basis. Be open and transparent with them. Tell them you are new to this but excited and ready to learn. Share your failures and ask for help. These are traits we want in our learners, and we should exemplify them as we learn.

If you are just starting out and don’t have the network yet, start with a book. PBL Simplified can give you a plan to build out a PBL Unit. As you read the stories of others, you can do your own reflecting on their win and fail stories as you build up your own! Hopefully, it saves you from a few failures. With this free book study, you can invite others int to go through the book as you build your PBL Units together.
