Changing Education Through Strong Leadership | E175

From my own shift from the world of engineering to the vibrant classrooms of teaching, I've experienced firsthand the electrifying impact of project-based learning (PBL) on both engagement and academic success. In our latest episode, I peel back the layers of this educational revolution, revealing how PBL not only boosted student performance but also increased attendance and diminished disciplinary issues. I open up about the inception of a PBL-centered school within a school, offering a blueprint for empowering leadership in education that could rewrite the narrative for students and teachers alike.

The conversation takes an inspiring turn as we introduce Maureen, a relentless advocate for inclusivity and personalized learning who is deeply committed to lifting up marginalized communities. With her at the helm of a micro school, we go deep with the concept of these small, relationship-focused educational settings that strike a delicate balance between traditional practices and the innovative changes crucial for addressing each student's individual journey. Maureen's story is a testament to the power of aligning teaching with passion and creating an educational culture that leaves a lasting impact.

We then cast a spotlight on the groundbreaking Microschool Grant Program with Getting Smart, exploring how it's fueling small schools in underprivileged areas to blossom and innovate. The episode wraps up with a discussion on the symbiotic relationship between education and business partnerships, and the ripple effect of students who return to their alma maters as educators, keeping the legacy of a nurturing the system alive. Join us as we explore these transformative tales and consider the future of education where every student's potential is not just recognized but fervently pursued.

Inquiry, Magic and Project-Based Learning | E169

Picture a future where half of all schools are dynamic hubs of project-based learning—a future where education is a canvas for curiosity and real-world problem-solving. That's the vision we unpack in this episode, and with February's focus on inquiry, inspired by Trevor MacKenzie's "Inquiry Mindset," we're stoking the flames of this educational revolution. Our special guest, Steve Haffner, illusionist and performance strategist, exemplifies the spirit of inquiry, using his unique blend of magic and strategic thinking to challenge and engage, proving that the thirst for knowledge can extend beyond the classroom walls.

The PBLShare.com portion of this episode highlights the classroom work of Rosa Parks Elementary School in Indianapolis, IN. Their work is changing the way their learners interact with the world. Learners are using their standards based work in the classroom to change lives out in their city. Listen and be inspired!

Ever wondered how the art of illusion can reveal the inner workings of the human mind? Steve Haffner takes us on an enthralling journey through his pivot from the corporate grind to the allure of the stage, illustrating how the principles of magic—misdirection, storytelling, and the element of surprise—mirror the cognitive processes we navigate daily. Steve's narrative is a masterclass on how cognitive dissonance is not just a trick of the trade for magicians but a powerful tool for educators and leaders alike.

Inquiry in Project-Based Learning | E168

As Ryan Steuer, I warmly invite you to journey with me in remembering my mentor, Dan Miller, as we bring his inspiring question, "What does this make possible?" into the heart of educational reform. Through genuine reflections and strategies, we honor Dan's legacy by exploring the power of a shared vision, particularly our ambitious goal to see project-based learning  in over half of all schools by 2051. It's a conversation that stitches together the wisdom of Dan's "48 Days to the Work and Life You Love" with real-world applications,  leadership, unity, and educational innovation.

This episode isn't just a tribute; it's the beginning of a series on inquiry. Drawing from Trevor MacKenzie's "Inquiry Mindset," we unravel the progression from structured to free inquiry and how it intertwines with project-based learning to ignite student curiosity and research prowess. I'll share classroom stories that breathe life into these concepts—from a Florida PBL unit on home buying to senior capstone projects that leave lasting imprints on communities. Get ready to discover how we scaffold learning and craft authentic experiences that elevate our students from passive learners to proactive problem solvers, ready to dive headfirst into their PBL journey.

Standards and PBL - Matt Navo | E166

Unlock the potential of project-based learning (PBL) and its impact on the future of education with Matt Navo of the California Collaborative for Educational Excellence. Our conversation peels back the layers of educational policy and its intersection with PBL, providing an enlightening perspective on how we can reimagine learning. As a former eighth grade English teacher, my own classroom transformation through PBL led to notable improvements in discipline rates and attendance, a testament to the methodology's effectiveness. With standards at the forefront, we discuss the balancing act between real-world problem-solving and the rigidity of state testing, aiming for a harmonious blend that advances student performance.

The tug-of-war between the aspirational goals of education and the constraints of standardized testing is a theme we examine with intrigue. Inspired by Simon Sinek's infinite game concept, we confront the finite metrics that often overshadow the deeper, more significant outcomes of learning. Amidst this, we champion the essence of PBL, where passion and purpose collide to create a more meaningful educational journey. We also consider the necessity for educators to step into the policy arena, advocating for a shift from traditional assessments to a narrative that cherishes broader indicators of success, such as graduation and college completion rates.

Exploring the terrain of instructional frameworks that support PBL, we question the adequacy of a single test to capture the breadth of a student's educational journey. We highlight the critical role of universal design for learning (UDL) in cultivating environments where diverse learning styles can thrive through PBL. Additionally, we address the importance of advocacy in educational policy changes, underlining the power of community involvement in ensuring PBL's longevity. Each chapter of our dialogue paints a picture of the evolving landscape of education—facing challenges, seizing opportunities, and striving toward a future where every classroom is a hub of inspiration and innovation.
