Planning a PBL UNIT VIDEO SERIES
The “What is PBL?” video series is a resource designed to assist educators in the adoption and implementation of Project Based Learning. This resource includes seven video sessions covering the basic elements of planning a PBL Unit.
Along with each video you will find companion resources for deeper study. In addition, use the Discussion Questions to further explore the PBL concepts covered in each video.
Videos are based on common “need to knows” we regularly encounter when training educators in Project Based Learning. “What is PBL?” videos can be used by individuals or an entire staff for PBL professional development.

#1 - The “WhY” for project Based Learning
This session explains what Project Based Learning is and outlines its benefits for students, teachers, and communities.
#2 - PBL vs. Projects
In this session, you will learn about the significant differences between Project Based Learning and projects.
#3 - PBL Unit planning process
In this session, you will walk through the 6 A’s Project Design Rubric and each of the key elements for creating a solid PBL Unit. Then you’ll work through the PBL Unit planning process step-by-step and plan your own PBL Unit using a planning form.
#4 - PBL Driving Questions
In this session, you will learn about the purpose of driving questions and the criteria for an effective driving question as well as receive support on how to craft your own driving question for your PBL Unit.
#5 - PBL End Products
In this session, you will learn what end products are and see examples of them in order to identify end products for your own PBL Unit.
#6 - PBL Benchmarks & Scaffolding
In this session, you will be learning what benchmarks and scaffolding are as well as how to benchmark your end products and provide scaffolding for each benchmark throughout your PBL.
#7 - PBL Community Partners
In this session, you’ll learn about the benefits of community partners within a PBL unit. You’ll learn how to find community partners, incorporate them into a PBL, and identify specific community partners for your own PBL.
