What does PBL look like in High School?

Senior Projects, Capstone Project...that last chance to show all that you learned over your educational career. We do our learners a disservice if the first time they are expected to find a problem, solve it, and present it well is their last year of education. When learners go through a K-12 PBL environment, the Senior Projects are lights out! They are organizing a women’s STEM night, organizing 5ks for charity, or discovering a mold that has never been discovered before in North America. The transferable skills are endless when they’ve been building them since Kindergarten.

What about PBL in A.P. courses? The research is positive. The study found that students who took the PBL courses outperformed those in traditional AP courses. Specifically, the students were more likely to earn a credit-qualifying score of 3 or higher (on a scale of 1 through 5) on the end-of-year AP tests. (same results for low-income households as higher income households.

PBL and professional learning for teachers creates dynamic PBL environments. It’s the way we’ve always wanted to teach. Taking our content in the classroom and applying it to the real world. These are the skills our learners really need when they leave our school systems. These are the skills our employers are asking for from us.

“This research should spur the development of additional programs that promote the use of project-based learning in rigorous high school courses.” https://www.lucasedresearch.org/research/research-briefs/
