The 6 A's of PBL Project Design: Authenticity

Agrarian, affluent, agile, adroit, acute, acme ...these are all great words, but they are not what we mean we talk about the 6 A’s of PBL Project Design. We're continuing a series around the 6 A’s of PBL Project Design. This video will address Authenticity.

If you have found your purpose in teaching, you know that your college courses were not your purpose. Those courses were preparation for your purpose. Ideally, they created motivation and passion for your purpose while equipping you with the skills and resources needed to fulfill your purpose. Those times where you first got to be with learners are challenging but exciting. They ignite your passion toward your purpose.

Your classroom can be the same way, but it’s not the content that will ignite a learner’s purpose. It will be the real world problem where you apply that content. At Magnify Learning, we call that authenticity. The more authentic and real world the work is, the more we can help learners find their purpose in the world.

Nobody finds their purpose in writing a perfect compound sentence or by understanding the economic levers involved in the Great Depression. A learner can find their purpose as they write meaningful words back and forth to someone at a nursing home.

The content is our vehicle to help every learner understand they have a meaningful place in the world. The more authenticity, the more engagement, and the more benefit to our learners as meaningful people.

In Magnify Learning professional development, we help teachers engage with community partners to help bring authenticity to any classroom. Community Partners are the key to bringing in the real world. Your content is valuable in the real world or you wouldn’t be teaching it. You are the connection between your learners and the real world. As you make the introduction you start to see your learners wake up to their true purpose. That’s when things get exciting!
